- all matter is composed of atoms which are too small to be seen and can’t be split up more

- there is a void/empty space between atoms

    • changes of matter occur through the movement of atoms, therefore there must be a space devoid of matter through which they can move

- atoms are completely solid

    • Leucippus- the word atom come from the Greek word “a-tomos” which means “indivisible”

- Atoms are homogeneous with no internal structure

    • They are the same all the way through

- Atoms differ in size and shape

    • The properties of matter are due to the properties of the atoms they contain
    • Ex: bitter matter is made of sharp atoms while sweet matter is made of smooth atoms

- Democritus and Leucippus rejected the idea that everything is one and that change and motion are illusions
